When I was living in Busan in Southern South Korea I did a search to see if there was a Jewish center I could connect with. As it turns out there IS such a place in Busan - the "Bayit Yisraeli" - the Israel House.

The "Bayit Yisraeli" is actually managed by a local Korean minister who lived and studied in Israel for 7 years. He speaks Hebrew and that is the language we conversed in. I was thrilled and it was thrilling to be able to have a place where I could feel comfortably "at home" in Busan.

Park Yong Guk, the manager, is a gentle and very accommodating man who welcomed me with open arms. He conducts tours of the "House" to students and Koreans who are interested in learning more about Israel (ancient and modern). It may be important to note that the "Israel House" does not focus on religion. It focuses on the land, the place, the history of the country, Israel.

While I lived in Busan I would frequent the "Israel House" and actually went there to conduct my own personal prayer service for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. We had hoped that I would become more involved and teach some Hebrew. Sadly I became employed and had to move to Seoul so could not pursue that path. However, the "Israeli House" strives to be a resource to anyone interested in knowing more about Israel, the land and the people.

Inside the "House" there is also a beautiful room dedicated to the Holocaust. It is modeled after Yad VaShem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. I admit that for some reason I had not been so moved in regards to the Holocaust as I was when I first entered the room in the "Israel House" in Busan. I was actually moved to tears (finally!). Was it because there are hardly any Jews in Korea and in Busan I was pretty much it for much of my time there?

The "Israel House" is a MUST-VISIT for Jews and non-Jews alike.

There is only one other place in all of Korea when Jews can get a taste of "home". That would be the Chabad House in Seoul. It is essentially the home of Rabbi & Mussy Litzman and their children. They welcome visitors for Shabbat and holiday observances, weekday worship, Kosher meals and Jewish community. It also houses a STORE where one can be assured of Kosher pickings!
