"Space Sweepers" [승리호 - Seung Ri Ho ] My first feature film appearance!!
I began my acting/model career here in Seoul, South Korea over a year ago (May 2019). Just when things seemed to be taking off Corona hit us. Now starting our 9th month of this plague things are certainly not looking up.
My very first acting role was in this Korean fantasy feature film, [승리호] or "Space Sweepers" starring some of Korea's top actors including Song Joong Ki and Kim Tae Ri. Filming began in July 2019 with the final release set for around the next summer (2020).
I would like to add that it also features quite a number of talented LOCAL "FOREIGNERS" or non-Korean actors like myself. Sadly though the promotional efforts for this film so far have blatantly ignored promoting this aspect of the film.
Generally speaking "foreigners" being featured in local dramas and films have been few and far between. Chosen for their appearance rather than talent or skills foreign actors have gained a rather dim reputation. Their English is usually pretty bad and many are not even trained actors. This means that overall they come off pretty badly when you see them. These days in Korea, however, more and more foreigners are coming to Korea to fulfill their dreams in the entertainment world. I would guess that 98% are coming because of the success and influence of K-Pop and K-Dramas. So many aspiring youngsters dream of becoming just like these awesome Korean talented entertainers. Maybe some day they will? Who knows?
I hope that the local actors in "Space Sweepers" will be featured in a good light. True, many are not trained actors. Instead they are models, educators and such but they really worked hard. We often talked amongst ourselves about doing our best to try to raise the reputation and bad attitudes that Koreans seem to have gained over the years.
I hope that at some point the producers will chip in the help remedy this and find a way to feature the additional talent in the film! After all, much like the early impact that "Star Trek" had on the social issues of the time (1960's) this film has the potential to do the same. For example, Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, consciously chose a multicultural team of actors and put them in prominent roles to try to break social barriers. "Space Sweepers" also features a woman as the captain of the crew and the local foreigners play quite a unique role as well. In fact this team of foreigners, of which I am one, is comprised of local residents who come from Italy, Spain, South America, Nigeria, Belarus, the USA and also Korea. A few words about this team would really help locals gain a better reputation and a lot of respect! Just sayin'...
In any case, the reality of the "job" is that when you work on a major feature film with celebrities of this stature, actually on any film or drama or project, you are pretty much left in the dark. You will be called in to do your part and that's about it. So if I've got it right - and don't quote me on it - the story is set in the future year of 2092. As earth became less inhabitable a community was established on another planet by a greedy bad guy played by British actor Richard Armitage. It is rumored that a bomb in the form of a human young girl is going to destroy the world. Our Korean celebrity actors play the part of a few rogue "space janitors" who, in the process of cleaning up space junk/garbage discover the girl. These rogue "janitors" work for money so they figure they can get a nice price if they sell the girl to the highest bidder. So the plot thickens as the search for the girl continues from many different angles. I won't give away much and in fact I really don't know much!!!
Needless to say I am eager to see the release of "Space Sweepers" [승리호] for the following reasons: 1) it is the first feature film that I have ever had the good fortune to appear in and 2) you will actually see me in my role!!! So for a first job I really can't complain.
The effect on the entertainment business is really taking its toll. I have been working but not steadily. I am offered many jobs, not all get "confirmed" but those that do often have been postponed, delayed or even canceled due to Corona. It's VERY frustrating.
Well, the best I can do is give you this recent promotional review of the upcoming film. Sorry it's all in Korea. I have no idea what they're saying either. LOL But it will give you a small glimpse into what we are all waiting for!!
